Amazing Nascar Finish at Talladega – Carl Edwards last lap wreck

Any race fan will tell you – Talladega is known for its white-knuckle, bumper grinding, bump-drafting, giant pileup, last-lap-pass racing.

This week’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega was no exception.

Nascar drivers generally don’t like restrictor plate racing because the plate limits the amount of horsepower these cars have, thus making it near impossible to pull away. The cars drive around in a huge pack, wide open, using the “draft” to find the speed needed to get around the other cars. This means that any mistake by a driver who is drafting in the big pack of cars, creates a chain-reaction – collecting all the cars around them. Wrecks like this can gather up half the field and are referred to as the “big one”.

The fans love restrictor plate races for precisely the same reason drivers don’t. We love watching the cars race around at over 200mph, like three inches apart. They bump each other, race four wide at times, and put on an “edge of your seat” show for us sitting at home.

Hypothermia – As close as I’d like to get.

Someone recently asked me “What’s the most terrifying thing has happened while hiking?” I thought about that for a bit and there is one instance that clearly stands out as the most frightening, but I was camping, not hiking. I thought I’d share.

Five or so years ago I drove down to Pocono Pennsylvania to watch the NASCAR Pocono 500. We had camped about six or seven miles from the track at a little campground that seemed to cater to race fans. (Actually, everything within ten miles of the track, or any track for that matter, caters to race fans)

It was Sunday night and we were partying at the campsite following the race. Our plan was to stay there Sunday night and drive home Monday morning. That way we would beat the race-day traffic. If you have never been to a NASCAR race, the traffic leaving the track can be simply incredible. It’s not uncommon to sit in traffic for three or four hours if you stay until the checkers and not duck-out early.

NASCAR Busch Series at NHIS – Best bang for your buck!

I recently went to the Busch Race at NHIS (June 30) and while I was at the track it got me thinking…

Ladies and Gentlemen – Start your ENGINES!!

Ok, it’s no secret to the people that know me – I’m a big NASCAR fan. I’ve been following it for ten years. Initially a huge Dale Earnhardt fan (bordering fanatical), I’ve grown into more of a general fan of the entire sport, rather than a fan of one driver. I do have a couple favorites, but it’s usually people who don’t seem to do too much these days. I dig people like Kyle Petty, Kenny Schrader, Jarrett and Waltrip. Oh, and Tony Stewart, Junior, Truex, and… oh hell, it’s easier to point out the drivers I don’t care for, though admittedly there aren’t many (*coughs* – Kurt Bush).
