Kayaking the Powow River – Downtown Amesbury to the Merrimack River… and then some

I went Kayaking today with a friend of mine. We didn’t have a ton of time, so we decided on someplace close to both of us – The Powow River. I’ve lived in Amesbury for a few years, and lived in the area (Newburyport) for something like 25 years. When Justin (friend I went with) said we should try the Powow, and put in near the center of downtown Amesbury, I was a little less than excited. I know that the Powow runs through downtown Amesbury, and ends up in the Merrimack River, but I honestly thought the section from downtown Amesbury, to the Merrimack was little more than a dirty, short, urban slog until it spills into the Merrimack.

So, I was excited to get out, but not at all expecting anything grand from the Powow. At least not this section of it. I’ve done some of the Powow upstream from downtown Amesbury and it’s pretty decent. But, like I said, I didn’t think the “lower” part of the river could possibly be any good. It’s surrounded by highways, shopping centers, apartments, old mill buildings and all the other dirty characteristics that define a blue-collar historic New England town.

Ok, all that said…

I was absolutely taken aback by how far, open, scenic, and awesome it was. The river ran for a long stretches through areas of thick vegetation that look more like a wilderness refuge than a city.

police, eggs, cleaning, computer format, and 50 people at my house tomorrow… yikes!

Today really covered the bases. I’m not sure if I can do it justice in a quick post, but let’s try.

First off, we woke up at 7:30am to pounding bass from the neighbor coming through the bedroom wall. Make no mistake, this was not “kinda loud”. I’m talking “jump up in bed, it’s 7-eff’n-30 in the morning, what the hell are you thinking?” sort of loud. I got all pissed off and started cursing, while my wife walked outside and and knocked on the neighbors door, half asleep, to ask if they can maybe turn it down. She had to bang a few times just to get them to hear her.

When they did finally come to the door, the neighbor said they would “take care of it” in a crass, rude tone and slammed the door in my 8-month pregnant wife’s face. Not shut it, but shook the entire front of the house. I tell you, these people are a piece of work.

Well a few minutes later, considering the music continued to bang against our wall, we called the police. A further two minutes later, a cruiser arrived to find the neighbors sitting in plastic chairs with a little plastic table on the front porch smoking. Music was echoing out the door behind them. The porch is common area, they are not even supposed to be out there settled in and smoking – but don’t even get me started on that.

House party, white trash, tenders and beers… TGIF!

Ok couple things today…

First off – {insert name here}, stay out of my way. You are nothing but drunk white trash. We know, the police know, my lawyer knows, and you need to tread extremely lightly around me. You can’t win this, so don’t try or you will just look more stupid than you do already.

Second, I’m crazy nervous about this weekend’s baby shower at the house. I’m at least 80% sure I will be calling the police on the neighbor. In fact, I’m almost looking forward to it. Assuming things don’t go that way (and I’m sure they will), we have two days left to get everything together so the day goes well. The house is cleaning up, the back yard is all cleaned up, the fence is up and we are both doing everything we can to ensure everything is in place. 50 people in my house is going to be ludicrous.

But, the party is at most three hours baby! I need only last three hours. Then it will all be behind me. Ok, to be honest I’m sure it will go fine. I’m just overwhelmed with things that need to still be done. I’m usually pretty busy anyway with work, band, freelance and whatnot. Add this sort of thing into the mix and life tends to get a little crazy.

Amesbury Ma – life is good in the carriage town!

Living in New England is just awesome. The weather is never boring, the people are generally decent, and I love the fact that I can sip coffee on the beach in the morning, take a hike in White Mountains in the afternoon, and catch a movie in the city at night. New England rules. I’ve lived in the Amesbury, Newburyport area most of my life. Now that I’m married, with family on the way, it somehow seems “right” that I own a home here.

I took advantage of the spring weather today, and wandered around town for a couple hours after work. While walking, I got a renewed appreciation for all the cool things I have in walking distance. I took some pictures:

I started the night with a quick three miles on my bike. This shot is from the top of the big hill at Woodsom Farm:

Mad River Tavern, Amesbury Ma

Amesbury Ma has never been known for its nightlife. We have a few decent pubs like “The Barn” and the “Barking Dog” in town, but nothing particularly active. Well, I guess The Barking Dog can get a little jumping, but it’s nothing that would draw people in from other towns to experience. If you live in Amesbury, and want to go out for a night with some friends, you usually have to drive to Newburyport or Portsmouth to find something fun.

A few months ago a new placed opened up in town that seems to throwing everyone into a fury, the “Mad River Tavern”. I had someone tell me that is was hands down the best place to have some beers, watch a game and chill out. Someone even went as far as to say that it’s the best bar north of Boston. So, needless to say I had to scope this place out…

First time home owner – bout friggin time!

I’ve been renting places to live for years. I’ve shared houses with roommates, lived in small one-bedroom apartments, and even had a 2800+ sq. ft. Amesbury farmhouse complete with sun porch, loft, attic, yard, and barn. I’ve had good neighbors, and I’ve had to move because of really bad neighbors. I think I can safely say that over the past fifteen years or so, I’ve experienced the gamut when it comes to being a pay-per-month tenant.

My most recent place (the big house mentioned above) seemed like a really good idea when we signed the lease last year, but as it turns out it was not the best decision. It was pretty to look at with drop tin ceilings, loft, a slate-floor family room with eighteen-foot ceilings, wide pine hardwood, and barn, but that’s where most of the enjoyment and practicality ends. Actually, to say that this house is impractical is to willingly engage in reckless understatements. To sum up, it’s 200+ years old, has lead paint, very bad windows, spiders, mold and mildew in the basement, and cost us *drum roll* about five grand to heat last year.
